My Kids vs Lentil Soup: The Winners and Losers

December 4, 2014

Two nights ago, I made (what I thought was a delicious) lentil soup. My husband had a meeting so it was just me and the kids. While they each decided they wanted a bowl of soup, both refused to eat it. My daughter at least tasted it and said it was "too clumpy." My son, possibly following my daughter's lead, refused to even eat it. And the boy loves soup!

So last night, with a HUGE pot of leftover lentil soup in the fridge, and two hungry kids on my hands, I decided to heat it up while the rest of dinner cooked. To be honest, I hadn't planned on serving it to them again, or, at least, not the next day. But they were hungry, dinner was still cooking and, did I mention it was a HUGE pot?!

I offered them both a bowl, and they both ran to the table. I was a bit surprised, and reminded them that it was the soup from the night before. Nods of agreement. My daughter ate two full bowls; my son almost finished his bowl. Moral of the story: you just don't know so keep offering. And kids can be weird.

In all seriousness, they were hungry last night. And the night before I served them breaded fish, one of their favorites, so even though it wasn't on the table, they knew it was coming. Maybe that's why they weren't interested in the lentil soup. Or maybe they just didn't feel like it.

Now that it's cold and dark so early, I try to serve soup a few times a week. It's such a great way to start a meal, because kids tend to be hungriest when they first sit down, and soup tends to be jam packed with veggies.

Tonight I'm making faux spaghetti bolognese with lentils. We'll see how well the lentils go over this time. Fortunately, I finished the soup for lunch!
